Christmas in Poland is a major annual celebration, as it is in most of the western world.
Christmas Eve is a night of magic in Poland. Animals are said to talk human and people are said to see the future. People from Poland believe that if girls grind poppy seed on Christmas Eve they will have a quick marriage. On Dec.24 women are seen cleaning their houses every few hours as evil spirits haunt dirty things.
On Christmas Eve there is a Wigilia feast. It’s also the time for a family reunion in Poland. Families eat an oplatek, a dough wafer .After everyone turns to the Christmas tree. Then people will receive a nicely staked present under the Christmas tree from the host. Not many people keep this tradition though. Children receive their presents on Christmas eve.
Christmas is called “Gwiazdka” in Poland. It is believed if a women is the first to enter the house it is bad luck. And if a man is the first to enter it is good luck.
Holiday Greetings and Best Wishes
For a New Year of Happiness in a World of Peace
