Aboriginal people, between 40,000 and 60,000 years ago, had an impact on kangaroos, through hunting and through frequent burning of habitat vegetation. The dingo, which arrived about 3,500 years ago, became a major kangaroo predator.
Humans hunt kangaroos for their meat and hides. Also, the introduction of domestic herbivores, such as sheep, cattle and rabbits increases competition for many plants and may cause food scarcity in times of drought.
A number of species of kangaroo are listed as threatened in NSW.
